LEE JEANS - LEE NATIONAL DENIM DAY®

Lee Jeans has been manufacturing denim and casual apparel for more than 100 years. Lee Jeans is the No. 1 brand of jeans for women. Its competitors were making inroads into the women’s jeans/casual apparel field. Lee established a goal to get women to wear denim to work, thus meeting core business objectives to increase the dollars spent on denim apparel.

To help convince corporate America to relax dress codes to allow denim, Barkley Evergreen & Partners developed a signature cause branding program for Lee Jeans: Lee National Denim Day®. It happens on one Friday every October which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lee knew breast cancer was a cause women cared about. Lee asks organizations nationwide to allow their employees to wear denim to work in exchange for a $5 contribution to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

In the first eight years of the Lee National Denim Day campaign, more than $43 million has been raised for the Komen Foundation, all from individual $5 donations, making it the largest single-day fundraiser for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs.

By creating, launching and managing the Lee National Denim Day program, Barkley Evergreen & Partners has helped solidify Lee’s reputation as a company that cares and a brand that strongly identifies with its core consumer. In a recent brand tracking survey, a female consumer summarized Lee’s effort by saying, “Lee cares more about women than it does about selling jeans. Period." And Gordon Harton, President of Lee Jeans says, "Lee National Denim Day is my favorite day of the year because it says more about the Lee brand than anything else we do."
